In Four Degrees of Separation, the female bond is put to the test when four friends, Mariyah, Delisa, Tabatha, and Chardonnay, move in together.

Tune into the drama in this eventful novel full of treachery, backstabbing, and jealousy. With all of this dissension, can friendship still be found? Lessons are learned on when to forgive, who to trust, and who to get out of your friendship circle—quickly.

Rewa is very excited about Four Degrees of Separation, her second book and first novel. This novel will ring true for everyone who has been betrayed by a friend, had to let go of a long-life friend, and had to hold on to the only true friend they’ve ever had.

Rewa’s first book is Feeling Poetic, A Book of Poetry, a heartfelt collection of poetry. Time is obviously not slowing down for me, as I prepare to publish my novel, Four Degrees of Separation. Publishing the novel is not the same as when I published Feeling Poetic, A Book of Poetry…it’s more challenging and there is more to be done. However, I am determined to get this project off the ground, and looking forward to the release of the novel.

Thank you for all of your support as I approach this new venture. Mostly everyone was very close!

Here’s my motivation for writing this poem.

When you go through a break up with someone and you know deep down that this person still has strong feelings for you, but for whatever reason, does not want to commit so they leave. They then jump back into the dating scene, but that foolish pride won’t let them come back, so they continue to live a lie, going through relationship after relationship, meaningless encounter after meaningless encounter, hoping that each one will erase your memory. You sit back and painfully watch them do this to themselves, and to you. And you wonder…when are they going to get tired.

What do you feel?

Here’s a poem from my latest collection that I want to share. I plan on picking up The Black Poets by Dudley Randall which contains a full range of Black American poetry with poems by Langston Hughes, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and many, many more.

Poetry for me is a matter of expression, an artistic way to get out the many emotions that we go through each day.

I have decided to share a poem about friendship from Feeling Poetic, my book of poetry. I wrote With Friends Like Mine when I first encountered the ugly side of friendship, which still rings true today. Hope you enjoy it!

With Friends Like Mine

My back is sore,
I don’t know if I can take anymore

Of the knives that hit me,
Why are all my friends like enemies?

Why do they appear to be sincere?
But when darkness appears

They turn like the hands of time,
I’m telling you with friends like mine…

My enemies don’t get the opportunity,
They have to take a number to get next to me,

Because my friends get all of my time;
All the hating, backstabbing, and lies.

Their feelings are wounded from the sight of me,
I have to keep in mind that I can’t just be me

Or they’ll think I’m trying to out-do or out-shine;
Then here come the schemes along with the lies.

Because that’s the only way they can deal
With then envy that they feel,

They have to create a plot and design a plan
To break my spirits the best way they can.

Only so that they can feel better,
Thinking they can ruin me, makes them feel clever.

Or if they aren’t busy doing this,
For my kindness and attention they persist.

And if I dare to not have enough time,
Here goes with the hating and the lies.

It soothes their ego to receive all of my attention, you see,
They get bent out of shape as if I’m a celebrity.

Sometimes I feel like I am, the way I duck and dodge words,
Careful not to say this, look like this, or do this—it’s absurd.

I feel sorry for my enemies; they’d better stand back
Because my friends will smell competition and declare an attack.

My friends cease to acknowledge that I am aware of their conniving ways,
So I let them run around me in circles and not one word I say.

Until they bump heads with each other and fall with exasperation,
Again I stand untouched and firm from patience.

I’m sure we’ll engage in internal warfare again,
And once more my enemies will become my friends.

Fav Book List

Are you an avid reader? I would like to say that I am, but the truth is, lately, I haven't been reading as much I would like. How interesting it is that we all know how bad and evil jealousy and envy is, but we still can’t resist hating on each other. How when you try to mind your own business and do right, people still pull you into their craziness. How we need to be strong through it all, be confident, and never give up on our dreams and goals. That somehow, in the end it all comes together, and even with the bad, we can still make something good out of it and make it a good experience.

Poetry at a Book Club Meeting

I would love for Feeling Poetic to be a book club selection, even though it is a book of poetry. I know many look at poetry as something they will have to struggle through in order to make sense of what the poem is about, or have to wreck their brains in analyzing each verse, but none of that is necessary. Feeling Poetic is reader friendly.

If you have ever been in love, Feeling Poetic is love. If you have ever lost a relationship that you really wanted to work, Feeling Poetic has poems that you can relate to. Ever had a friend that ticked you off? Feeling Poetic has poems for that too. And the poems are self explanatory in the message they convey. Poems of encouragement, pain, love—it’s all there.

So if you are a member of a book club, I challenge you to take on Feeling Poetic. Each chapter is a feeling, and any group of women and men will have plenty to discuss.

You can find more information about Feeling Poetic on my website, www.rewamariefyles.com, as well as featured poems.

Why Love?

“Feeling Poetic” contains love poetry—deep and emotional love poetry. Comments I often receive from readers are, “the poems are too emotional” and “why are all the poems about love?” First, all of the poems are not about love. I do have poems that are about friendship and encouragement; as a matter of fact, one of the sections in the book is titled Feeling Encouraged. But, the majority of the poems are about love.

I love to write about love, be it in love or out of love. After reading some of my poems, I am moved at how deep and emotional they are, so I can definitely understand why some people react a certain way to my poems. Sometimes, we are in the mood to deal with our feelings, and the right book, movie, or poem, can really help during that time. But other times, maybe not. There are moments when the last thing you want to hear about is love, the joy or the heartbreak.

I published “Feeling Poetic” for those moments when people do want to read about love, the joy of being in love, wanting someone, the frustration when love doesn’t go how we planned, and the pain when you lose a relationship that you really wanted to work. I’ve received positive feedback from those that have wanted to deal with these feelings, and read “Feeling Poetic.” I’ve had plenty tell me that they could really relate to certain poems.

So…to answer the question, why love? Why not? It’s a part of life, and for some, it is as natural as breathing.

Challenges

As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved to write. Be it my thoughts, creating a story, or poetry, writing is very natural for me. I would only share my love for writing with a few, sharing a poem or a story here and there. The reaction was always good.

After I had so many poems, I wanted to publish a book of poetry, but never explored it because of my career in corporate America. Well, my career was taken away from me with an unexpected lay-off. After I recovered from the initial devastation, I was able to pull it together and self-publish my book of poetry.

Challenges I faced were people not viewing me as an artist, only as the corporate type they had become accustomed to. It seemed that people did not want to accept that I succeeded in the corporate world, and although that was taken away from me (although temporarily) I had other interests and talents to explore.

This caused another challenge, which was determining who to keep in my inner circle, and who to let go. I learned the hard way that no matter how excited you are about your accomplishments, there are people who will not share in your joy, and that energy is not good to have around for any artist. It blocks your creative flow, and can even deter you from your journey, if you let it.

The answer—those that cause major opposition, to the curb they go. Those that don’t try to prevent you, but at the same time, their enthusiasm for you is very low, keep them out of your journey. That saying “keep them at arms length” comes to mind. Those that support you, thank them, cherish them, and return the support in their goals. And keep going.

My first book, "Feeling Poetic, A Book of Poetry," has been an eye-opening experience in so many ways.
